The Abstractor — Structural analysis of organizational situations
The Abstractor is a clinical, non-prescriptive analysis environment. It translates concrete organizational observations into structural readings: what kind of situation this is, what load the system is carrying, what capacity it has to close decisions, and which regime — adaptive, threshold, or stabilizing — the observation points toward. The tools describe conditions. They do not give advice.
Core variables
- Capacity (K) — the system's ability to close decisions and integrate new information.
- Complexity load (C) — coordination pressure, dependencies, and unresolved requirements weighing on the system.
- Load debt (B) — accumulated postponed decisions and unresolved coordination cost.
- Decisiveness (R = K − C) — the running balance between what the system can carry and what it is being asked to carry.
Regimes
- Adaptive — capacity exceeds load; the system integrates and closes.
- Threshold — capacity and load are close; small shifts flip behavior.
- Stabilizing — load exceeds capacity; the system protects existing structure and postpones closure.
Method — six steps
- Språk (Language) — read what the formulation actually does.
- Struktur (Structure) — surface the pattern beneath the situation.
- Perspektiv (Perspective) — shift the frame to expose assumptions.
- Friktion (Friction) — locate where movement stops or translates.
- Begränsning (Constraint) — identify capacity limits and dependencies.
- Handling (Action) — describe the smallest structural next step.
